Langebaan Travel Guide: Beaches, Park & Day Trips

Everything we tell friends before they come to stay at SeasTheDay: what to do on the lagoon, when to see the wildflowers, where to eat, and how long it takes to get here. Written by the owners; last updated 20 October 2026.

Langebaan Lagoon and the main beach

The turquoise, flat-water lagoon that put Langebaan on the map — a 5-minute drive or a longer walk along the beach

Langebaan Lagoon is a long, shallow, turquoise inlet sheltered from the Atlantic by the Postberg peninsula. It's why the town exists as a holiday spot: flat water for kitesurfing, windsurfing, paddle boarding and swimming, with white sand along most of its length.

The main beach runs right past Schaapenzicht Estate, so from SeasTheDay you walk out of the garden gate, across the lawn and over the dune onto the sand. On calm mornings the water is glassy and the beach is quiet; when the south-easter fills in during summer afternoons, the lagoon in front of the estate fills with kites.

West Coast National Park

Iconic houseboats moored in Kraalbaai, inside the West Coast National Park a short drive away

The West Coast National Park wraps around the lagoon and starts just south of town. Inside you'll find Kraalbaai, with its houseboats moored in impossibly clear water and a beach that's ideal for a picnic and a swim; Preekstoel's rock pools; the Geelbek visitor centre and bird hides on the lagoon's salt marshes, which are internationally important for migrating waders; and long, empty Atlantic beaches on the park's ocean side.

SANParks charges a daily conservation fee at the gate (a Wild Card covers it). Gate times change with the season, so check the SANParks website before you go.

Postberg flower season (August–September)

Postberg's spring flower carpets bloom every August–September inside West Coast National Park

For a few weeks each spring the Postberg section of the national park opens to visitors and the veld turns orange, white and purple with daisies, gousblom and vygies. It's one of the best wildflower displays in South Africa, and you can often see eland, zebra, bontebok and ostrich among the flowers. Postberg is only open during flower season.

Go early in the day on a sunny, windless day: the flowers open in sunshine and close up when it is cold or overcast. Weekends are busy, so a midweek visit is much calmer.

Where to eat and drink

Fresh local seafood at nearby favourites like Pearly's on the Beach, Friday Island, and The Farmhouse Hotel

Langebaan's restaurants are an easy stroll or a short drive from the house. Pearly's on the Beach and Friday Island sit on the lagoon with their tables almost on the sand, good for a sundowner after a session. The Farmhouse Hotel up the hill has the classic view over the whole lagoon.

The West Coast is known for seafood: snoek, crayfish in season, and mussels and oysters farmed in Saldanha Bay next door. For a full self-catering braai there's a supermarket in town, and SeasTheDay has a full kitchen and braai to cook it all.

Kitesurfing, wing foiling and lessons

Langebaan is one of South Africa's best-known flat-water kite spots. The season runs roughly October to March, driven by the south-easter. You can launch right on the beach in front of the estate, and Obsession Kiting operates from the same estate for lessons, rentals and wing foil hire.

Further down the lagoon, Shark Bay inside the national park is a popular beginner spot with shallow, standing-depth water. Park entry fees and activity permits apply there, so check the current SANParks rules before you go.

Day trips from Langebaan

Eland, zebra, kudu and more at West Coast reserves like Thali Thali and Buffelsfontein, a short drive from the estate

Paternoster, about 45 minutes away, is a whitewashed fishing village with excellent seafood restaurants and the Columbine Nature Reserve on its doorstep. Nearer to home, the game farms around Langebaan, such as Thali Thali and Buffelsfontein, offer drives to see eland, zebra and kudu, and are good with kids.

Club Mykonos, at the northern end of town, has a casino, restaurants and its own marina. Cape Town and the Winelands make an easy (if long) day out down the R27 West Coast Road.

Getting to Langebaan

Langebaan is on the R27 West Coast Road, north of Cape Town. You'll want a car: there's no practical public transport, and the national park and day trips all need one. Approximate drive times from SeasTheDay (Schaapenzicht Estate):
