Reading the Langebaan forecast

Wind. In season the south-easter is a thermal wind: it usually fills in from late morning, peaks in the afternoon and drops around sunset. Look at the gusts as well as the average. A forecast of 18 knots gusting 28 calls for a smaller kite than a steady 20. Most riders on the lagoon are out from roughly 15 knots upwards.

Tide. Langebaan Lagoon drains and fills with the tide. At low water, sandbanks appear close to shore and the depth near the beach changes, which matters for foilers and for anyone learning. Check the tide reading above alongside the wind before you carry gear down.

Where you can ride. The beaches in front of Langebaan town, including the main beach at Schaapenzicht Estate, are where most people launch. Parts of the lagoon further south lie inside the West Coast National Park and are zoned, with some areas closed to watercraft, so check the SANParks rules before you kite outside the town beaches.

Safety. Don't ride alone when it's gusty, give swimmers and paddlers a wide berth near shore, and ask another rider for help launching and landing. The water is cold all year, so wear a wetsuit. Staying at SeasTheDay? You can launch from the beach in front of the house, and the month tiles above link to a page for each month of the season, from October to March.

Wind & Season FAQ

Langebaan's kite season runs roughly October to March, driven by the Cape south-easter (locally 'the Cape Doctor'). December and January are the most reliable months for strong, consistent wind; October, November and March still deliver good sessions with more light-wind days mixed in.

Yes — the lagoon is one of the flattest, most sheltered stretches of water on South Africa's West Coast, which is exactly why it's a popular spot for lessons as well as freestyle and foiling.
